Hamas Offers 5-Year Ceasefire in Exchange for Release of Israeli Prisoners

The Palestinian resistance group Hamas has expressed its willingness to reach an agreement with Israel.
Hamas has proposed that if Israel stops its military attacks on Gaza for five years, they are ready to release all Israeli prisoners.

According to a report by international news agency AFP, a Hamas official (who wished to remain anonymous) confirmed that Hamas is prepared for a one-time exchange of prisoners along with a five-year ceasefire.

Previous Negotiations and Stance

Earlier, on October 17, Hamas had rejected Israel’s offer of a partial ceasefire, where Israel proposed stopping attacks for 45 days in exchange for the release of 10 Israeli captives.

Hamas has always maintained that:

  • Any agreement must involve a complete resolution of the conflict.

  • This includes a full Israeli withdrawal from Gaza,

  • The exchange of prisoners,

  • And the immediate and gradual delivery of humanitarian aid to war-torn Palestinian lands.

On the other hand, Israel demands:

  • The return of all captives,

  • And the disarmament of Hamas and other resistance groups.

Background of the Ongoing War

The current conflict between Hamas and Israel began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas launched an attack on Israel.
During that attack:

  • 1,218 Israelis were killed.

  • 251 Israelis were captured by Hamas.

Since then:

  • Many of the prisoners have been released through previous agreements,

  • Some were killed during Israeli airstrikes,

  • And 58 Israeli captives are still believed to be in Hamas custody.

Past Ceasefire Attempts

Between January 19 and March 17, 2024, Qatar, Egypt, and the United States mediated a ceasefire.
During this period:

  • 33 Israeli captives were released (including 8 who were already dead),

  • In exchange, Israel released 1,800 Palestinian prisoners from its jails.

Heavy Human Losses in Gaza

According to Gaza’s Ministry of Health:

  • Since March 18, 2024, at least 2,062 Palestinians have been killed due to Israeli attacks.

  • The total number of Palestinian martyrs has now exceeded 51,439.

The humanitarian crisis in Gaza continues to worsen with each passing day, as the search for a lasting peace remains uncertain.
