Russian authorities have blocked Telegram Messenger in two regions over security threats, fearing that enemy forces may exploit the platform for militant activities.
According to the Minister of Digital Development in Dagestan, security services have observed an increase in militant activities in the predominantly Muslim regions of Dagestan and Chechnya.
🔴 Why Did Russia Block Telegram?
- Russian officials linked Telegram to the October 2023 Makhachkala Airport riots, where protesters stormed the airport attempting to attack passengers.
- Authorities stated that anti-Semitic hate speech and violent calls spread via Telegram before the attack.
- Following the riots, Telegram condemned the hate speech and pledged to block related channels, but Russian officials still view the platform as a security risk.
Dagestan’s Digital Development Minister, Yuri Gamzatov, stated that Telegram is frequently used by adversaries, justifying the ban as a federal-level decision.
