Israel’s withholding of aid to Gaza could be a war crime, UN warns

Geneva: The UN’s human rights chief has warned that Israel is withholding aid and that the move could amount to a war crime.

According to Al Jazeera’s report, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, said that Israel’s continued restrictions on the entry of aid into Gaza and the brutal atrocities in the region are an indication of using hunger as a tactic of war. Maybe that is a war crime.

Earlier, in a report with the support of the United Nations, it was stated that a famine situation may arise in Gaza by May, where 2.3 million people have been victims of the ongoing fighting between Israel and Hamas for 5 months.

The United Nations had urged to end this war and deliver aid to the besieged Palestinians immediately.

Speaking to media representatives in Geneva, Volcker Trucks spokesman Jeremy Lorenz said that the use of hunger as a weapon of war will be ultimately determined in court. The plight of the people of Gaza is unfathomable.

He read out the statement of Volker Truck that Israel, as an occupying power, is obliged to provide food and medical facilities to the occupied citizens, to meet their needs and to make it easier for welfare organizations to provide aid.

“This crisis is man-made and completely avoidable,” Volcker-Trick said.

UN spokesman Jens Lyrke told reporters in Geneva that if action is not taken, more than 200 people are expected to die every day.
