It is not the first time Kanizi, who arrived in the UK in 1977 from northern Cyprus, has clashed with Greenwich council with his zeal to celebrate fish and chips.

In 2016, City Hall ordered him to remove a much larger sign, about 17 feet tall, featuring a very similar design, above the gate.

He told the Telegraph: “It's just something to make people smile. But the council said 'it's a preservation area – you can't have that and you have to paint over it.' They also said people were complaining, but I don't believe it, everyone who's spoken to me says they love it.

“I'm going to hold on as long as I can…they haven't given me a date to paint on it yet, but they will. I have so many international clients. They all love to take a photo with the mural mural in the background.”
